How Charles University Scaled Digital Microscopy Teaching — and What Others Can Learn
Digital microscopy is changing how pathology and anatomy are taught. In this online session, Charles University — the largest and most renowned university in the Czech Republic — will show how it scaled digital microscopy teaching across five institutes, what changed in teaching practice, and what other universities can learn from that experience
The discussion will explore why Charles University chose this path, how digital teaching changed its educational possibilities, why the model was expanded, how the university contributed to the further development of SmartZoom® ClassRoom, and what practical lessons other universities, teaching institutes, and professional societies can take from this experience.
Lessons learned from more than 5 years
The Expert Talk is held by MUDr. Petra Kašparová, Ph.D. from the Fingerland Department of Pathology and MUDr. Tomáš Soukup, Ph.D. from the Department of Histology and Embryology at Charles University. Both are also active in the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové. Over more than five years, they have played a key role in building digital microscopy teaching at Charles University from the ground up and expanding it across five institutes. The session will be moderated by Corina Turner, Head of Marketing Global at Smart In Media.
A Practical Perspective
At Charles University, this digital teaching model was built using SmartZoom® ClassRoom — a multimedia platform for digital microscopy that combines digitized histology slides with teaching annotations, measurements, texts, videos, and audio materials in one learning environment. It also enables students to create their own annotations and work in virtual study groups.
